Dear Residents,

Please be aware that there has been a number of burglaries on the Bexley Borough recently. A common method of entry has been through the rear of the properties however burglary access can be via a number of different ways so please take note of the burglary prevention tips below.

Barnehurst has had one burglary recently. This is a recommendation for you to be vigilant and to help you prevent burglary happening to you.

While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you:

Double lock your door every time you leave the house.

Install security lights outside your property.

If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access.

Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows.

Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through.

If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house.

Make sure all valuables are out of sight.

Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps.

In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on.

Set your burglar alarm.

Lock your shed or garage.

Put trellis on top of garden fences to discourage a potential burglar jumping over your fence into your garden.

Don't leave wheelie bins by your fence or garden gate.

Mark, register or record your valuables.

Over the Christmas period you may receive/purchase expensive items, please don’t leave out the empty boxes showing what you have in your house.

If you are going on holiday don’t post this on any social media websites.

Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property if you are going away.
